JW Show: Holiday Archives – Trevor Larkin

Wed, 08/25/2010 - 21:00

What a great interview this was last September, and still such great topics that we discussed.  As Trevor’s a music entrepreneur and new media enthusiast (I saw that on Matt Stevens’ profile the other day, also pertains to Trevor) we had some great discussions about what a musician is, what they could/should be, and a few ideas on how to go about being a full-time musician.

Enjoy! ~JW

He provided us some great advice about the digital music industry, some insights into what we have to look forward to and what we may have left behind as well as tracks from his upcoming acoustic album, “Number 2″ as well as talk about a full-band, electric album which is all very exciting.

Yes! I did it! I did a show without any of my cool flashing lights or buzzing… buzzers. (?) Anyway, I’m happy to get the show out, although we’re still on the playlist meltdown as I don’t have access to all the wonderful information contained on my Lappy’s hard disk. Hopefully the next show will again be done via the Lappy, but for now we’ll just stick with this HP PC machine of beauty…

Anyway, enough with the internet sarcasm. Here’s the show:

JW Show 102: Stephen Dale Petit and V0iD

Wed, 08/11/2010 - 21:00

Another two great guests on the show this week and we’ll ACTUALLY take a break for the next few weeks… but we’ll plug in some great shows from the vault that you’re gonna love, especially if you’ve only been listening since we became a part of Recharged Radio.

Our first interview is with Wayne Doyle from the band V0iD who speaks to us about how a band can stay together for 10 years(!), the difference between US fans and UK fans, V0iD‘s double guitar sound, and more.

Also in this episode we get to hear a very interesting story from the likes of Stephen Dale Petit.  This blues guitar supremo (his PR company used that word and I think it fits perfectly) enlightens us on his quick trip to fame back in the late 70s, his fallout, and then his road back into the recording studio via busking – performing in London’s Underground rail network.  Funding his first record back with proceeds from the busking, he’s just released his second record “The Crave.”  We hear three tunes from the album, a story about a car ride with Ronnie Wood and Eric Clapton (in song and in story), and he tell us how he gets his perfect guitar tone for performances and recordings.  Great stuff here!

I also snuck in one more special thing before my holiday…

Matt Stevens, a guitar supremo in his own right,  just created a tune for free that you can download from his Bandcamp page.  A friend of his, Dan Wilson, passed away recently.  He was a great filmmaker and Matt’s not only allowed the song to be downloaded for free, but has sent me some links to Dan’s film work.  Have a look:

A big “thank you” to Matt for sharing that with the world and our best wishes to all of those surrounding Dan in their time of need.

That’s me for now.  The playlist…

paper-garden-records-logo1First, we have Paper Garden Records founder Bryan Vaughn who’s brought along a bunch of tracks from his label and talks candidly about the new music industry, 360 deals, and what they do when they sign artists.  With their roster growing from 3 to 12 bands in the last year, Bryan’s got some weight in his words!

Also, we’ve got the Little London Fields Festival coming up on Saturday and to highlight the occasion Alex and Lawrence Daw – brothers and the organisers of the festival – join us to tell us all about it and give away a free set of BACKSTAGE PASSES!! They’re also giving away regular tickets to the show… all of them in fact… as the festival itself is FREE!littlelondonfields

(At the time of this writing the backstage passes are still up for grabs!  Comment on this post or email me jw <at> thejustinwayneshow.com to win!!)

Cool, huh?  I think so, so I’m gonna be heading down there with my journalist friends Candice Ashby (from ceashby.wordpress.com) and Kim Sklinar of NeverEnoughNotes.co.uk.   Yeah, I have cool friends, why don’t you come meet them in London Fields?  Give us an @justinwayneshow tweet and we’ll find you… I’ll either be listening to tunes or eating…

Episode 99: Junebug’s Modern Day Fairy Tales

Wed, 07/21/2010 - 21:00

It’s a bit late in the year for june bugs, it being nearly August and all… but never too late if you like the midwestern tunes!  junebug logoAnthony and Tony (not the same person, we’ll discuss in the interview) from the band Junebug are on the show this week and we’re spinning some exclusive tracks from their new album Modern Day Fairy Tales that you can grab from their website, Junebugmusic.com.

And yes, apologies to the live broadcast listeners of this show – or those who tried to listen – as there were problems down the line.  However, I can nearly guarantee that next week’s Episode 100 will go off without a hitch as it will be broadcast from Maple Street Studios as I sort out Savoy Studio’s internet broadcasting capabilities.

Track of the Week this week comes to us from the extremely talented band Brave Chandeliers.  They had just sent me their song “Madmen” and notified me that it was available for free download from their website BraveChandeliers.com and after hearing it it instantly became TOTW.  Great stuff guys.

Wed, 07/14/2010 - 19:00

Larry Fulcher

That’s right, we’re having another go at episode 98 with a very special guest, Larry Fulcher.  We’ve also got a very interesting synth-pop Track of the Week from the band Different Frequencies (more info on them is on their label’s site Unpopular Music.)

Shall we tell you a bit more about Larry?

Larry was born in Houston, Texas and soon began his musical career singing in church at the tender age of five. At age thirteen, Larry moved to Southern California and began playing in bands at fifteen.  Then, Larry went on to record with Smokey Robinson and The Crusaders and during the eighties toured and recorded (keyboards and guitar) with many reggae artists including The Wailers, Third World and Andrew Tosh. He was also a featured vocalist on the Emmy Award winning ABC-TV series, ‘I’ll Fly Away’ and won a Grammy and W.C. Handy Award for his work with Taj Mahal.

And that’s just the start of it… we’ve got an hour with Larry on the show so… have a listen!  Here’s what else we’ve got:

Episode 98: Getting Closer…

Wed, 07/07/2010 - 21:00

<<Due to recording errors and general bugs in the computer this week, this show did not get recorded for its usual podcast.  Because of this, we’ll re-create Episode 98 over the next two episodes of the show in each 1st hour, as the second hours will contain dynamite interviews with the band Junebug and next week with Larry Fulcher!

To fill the gaping hole left by no JW Show podcast, I’ll throw the recent guest hosting I did on the Recharged Radio’s premiere show, The Friday Forum.  Look for that soon!>>

Barreling out of control into episode 100 we go!  Great stuff on the show this week including another Scudley Session with Peter Renzullo (not to mention having just followed a fantastic episode of Close to Nowhere, have you got on this podcast yet?)   He’s got the lovely Bakia Arslanoski along with him for some great tunes and great chat.

sierraAlphaLogoSplashSome exclusives this week!  First is the Track of the Week from Sierra Alpha coming from a yet-to-be titled EP as they just sent me some brand new tracks they’ve been working on.  This one, ‘I See Light’ is their most ballad-y tune to date and very nice, indeed.

Also, prompting a long-overdue interview to be scheduled in the coming weeks, Junebug has finished recording their next album, Modern Day Fairy Tales, to be released this autumn.  They’ve got a CD release party for their Fargo, North Dakota fans this weekend and for them we’ve played Casanova from the album which features Lil Buddy Mclain – a force to be reckoned with in the Minneapolis hip-hop scene.

What else have we got…

Next week we’ve got Larry Fulcher on the show – you’ll have heard his bass work in Titty Bingo, but also his production work, keyboard playing, singing, and his other talents in places like LOADS of popular reggae tunes, Taj Mahal’s backing band The Phantom Blues Band… Grammys, W.C. Handy Awards… it’s gonna be a great interview.  Be there.

And if you’re contributing to the 100th Episode of The Justin Wayne Show, make sure you send a message, mp3 or whatever to jw {@} thejustinwayneshow.com or have a look in the sidebar for our voicemail box and leave us a message!  We’ll play all the audio on the show (as long as you’re relatively nice!)  You’ve only got 2 weeks so get to work!

See you next week.
